A second, shallower water target ( m water depth) was chosen in the north basin because it had previously yielded a very high-resolution 9m core record covering the past 25ky (Johnson et al. ) and seismic reflection data indicated the same partially laminated facies persisted to ~40 mblf. In a group of international scientists interested in accretionary systems established a forum for discussion entitled ERAS (EaRth Accretionary Systems in space and time), following the philosophy that an integrated, multi-disciplinary and comprehensive programme of research in selected accretionary systems of all ages will provide a common. Although the data do not preclude changes in the rate of northward motion over the past 80 m.y., they are consistent with a constant northward progression at a rate of 18 km/m.y. Given the uncertainties in the data, rates of northward motion could be as low as 8 km/m.y. or as high as 22 km/m.y.
